o Cyber Monday Becomes Largest Online Sales Day in History

San Jose, Calif. -- When the final numbers are in, Cyber Monday is projected to rank as the largest online sales day in history, according to new online shopping data from Adobe. All told, Cyber Monday was expected to rake in $6.59 billion for the day, am increase of nearly 17%, year-over-year. By comparison, Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day brought in $5.03 billion and $2.87 billion in revenue, respectively. Top sellers on Cyber Monday included the Nintendo Switch, PJ Masks and Hatchimals & Colleggtibles figurines, Apple AirPods, streaming devices like Google Chromecast and Roku, and Super Mario Odyssey, the video game. "Shopping and buying on smartphones is becoming the new norm and can be attributed to continued optimizations in the retail experience on mobile devices and platforms," said Mickey Mericle, Adobe's vice president of marketing and customer insights. "Consumers are also becoming more savvy and efficient online shoppers. People increasingly know where to find the best deals and what they want to purchase, which results in less price matching behavior typically done on desktops. Millennials were likely another reason for the dramatic growth in mobile, with 75% expecting to shop via their smartphone."

o Elon Musk's SpaceX Raises Another $100 Million in Funding

Hawthorne, Calif. -- SpaceX, the Hawthorne-based space exploration startup led by Tesla co-founder Elon Musk, said it has raised another $100 million, increasing its latest funding round to $450 million. Twenty-five investors took part in the round, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The latest news comes three months after the company -- now valued at $21.5 billion, according to Equidate -- raised the initial $350 million of the round. SpaceX has developed rockets capable of taking off, delivering a payload, then landing back on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean. Musk also recently outlined plans to launch thousands of satellites into orbit to create a massive high-speed Internet network.

o San Mateo-Based Apttus Names Terry Schmid as CFO

San Mateo, Calif. -- Apttus, the San Mateo-based developer of cloud software that drives the business process between a buyer's interest in a purchase and the realization of revenue, on Tuesday named Terry Schmid as its chief financial officer (CFO). Schmid for the past seven years served as the CFO of Imperva, guiding that company through its 2011 initial public offering (IPO). He previously was the CFO at Coremetrics, which was acquired by IBM. The hire is key for a company that has raised $274 million since its inception, including $88 million in a round last year, and is looking ahead to the possibility of an IPO. "Terry's proven experience of helping high growth technology companies expand on a global basis meshes perfectly with Apttus' current evolution and future growth strategy," said CEO Kirk Krappe.

o Dictionary.com Names "Complicit" 2017 Word of the Year

Oakland -- Dictionary.com on Monday named "complicit" as its 2017's Word of the Year, after online lookups of the word on its site spiked three-fold. The site defines the word, which has been featured in the coverage of several major news stories, as "choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others." "Lookups for the word complicit increased by nearly 300 percent in searches in 2017 as compared to 2016," said CEO Liz McMillan, CEO. "We continue to see a direct correlation between trending word lookups and current events." Other words that trended during the year included: "intersex" (in January), thanks to model Hanne Gaby Odiele speaking up about being intersex to break taboos; "shrinkage" (in February), because the house featured on the famous episode of Seinfeld where this term was introduced was placed on the market; "tarnation" (in the first few months of 2017), due to the "What in tarnation" meme, in which people circulated images of animals and objects wearing cowboy hats; "horologist" (this year), thanks to the subject of the podcast S-Town, who worked as a clockmaker; and "totality" (in August), in relation to the solar eclipse.
